Age of Consent

Patients aged 16 or over can consent to or refuse treatment. Children under the age of 16 can give their own consent if the GP considers the child capable of understanding the treatment and consequences of the same. If the child is considered as capable the GP will seek the consent of the child rather than the parent. In this case the child has rights of confidentiality and the parent/guardian should only be consulted with the child's consent.
