Mrs Katie Sainsbury - Joint Secretary/Newsletter Editor
Our family has been with the Practice since we came to live in Truro over 40 years ago! I have been interested in health and social care since I was a teenager and started my teaching career at St Austell College in the 1970s developing fun courses in psychology.
By the 1980s I was lecturing in Psychology and Sociology at Cornwall College branching out, on occasion, into teaching Health and Social Care. Part of my role was to teach student midwives at Treliske Hospital as well as teaching post-registration nurses at St Clements Vean (at the top of Tregolls Road).
In 1990 I started to work for the Open University teaching Health and Social Care to undergraduates and I was privileged to be one of the first to teach the Open University’s Nursing Degree Students in the South West. I regularly used to travel up and down the A38 to see my students at both Derriford and Torbay Hospitals!
For some years I also worked as a Counsellor for Relate.
Although I am now retired I am still very interested in health care and in enabling all of us, both patients and care providers, to be able to voice our views and to have them heard.
Mrs Ruth Varker - Joint Secretary
Ruth has 27 years experience within the NHS.
Mrs Lesley Clayton - Newsletter Editor
I have been a patient at the practice since 2008. I was a teaching assistant in a Falmouth Primary school for sixteen years and a Vice-Chair of Governors for Falmouth School up to 2008. I have not worked in healthcare, but I am educated to degree level in the sciences. The NHS has always served me well and I want to give back by belonging to this group
Mrs Linda Halfpenny
Mr John Berriman
I was born just outside of St. Ives on the Zennor Road on a dairy farm in 1954. Basically, I took over the family farm from my father after studying at Cornwall College. I married Sally in 1975.
In 1990 we emigrated to Canada where we also dairy farmed. After two years we returned to the UK and I started studying to be a minister in the church. At the same time, I set up a milking machine company. I was ordained in April 2006 and served as lead pastor in St. Ives and then Launceston and Bodmin. I recently retired as a minister but I still work as a dairy engineer for my son’s dairy business. Approximately three years ago I started getting interested in nutrition and completed a course. Mainly focusing on obesity and type two diabetes. After completing the course (& loosing 1 1/2 stone in the process) with Nutrition Network I applied to become an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration, a voluntary organisation, working to encourage a healthy lifestyle of real food eating, who, through working with many GP practices around the country have seen many individuals reversing their type 2 diabetes as well as saving the NHS thousands of pounds in drugs at the same time. I have a daughter who is a GP in Truro as well as a Son-in-law who is a consultant in endocrinology, who both support the work that we do. I, with my wife Sally, currently run courses (mainly online) for those that are interested.
I appeared on Dragon’s Den and have had the privilege of writing a book. We now live on a small holding at Penstraze, Chacewater and are both patients of Lander Medical Centre.
