Teaching Practice

In 2009 we were authorised as a teaching practice.  We were the first practice on the Island to achieve this.  A teaching practice offers fully qualified doctors, with experience in hospital medicine, the opportunity to learn about the personal, primary and continuing care of patients and families that is General practice. 

They will gain a unique understanding of the management of acute, chronic, recurrent and terminal illness in both the surgery setting and in the patient’s home.  The work in the surgery placement will also enable them to achieve the higher qualification of Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners – after passing the appropriate examinations. 

During the placement, the trainee may treat patients as a general practitioner under the supervision of a GP trainer.  Like all doctors, the GP trainee must meet the standards of care, competence and conduct set out by the General Medical Council guidance.

FY2* Doctors (*foundation year 2)

New Doctors undergo a 2 year post-graduate medical training programme, this is made up of placements in different specialities throughout the hospital such as emergency medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry etc and in more recent times a 4 month rotation in General Practice has been added to their training.  We normally have 1 or 2 Doctors on placement at any time and as with all trainees they are mentored very closely.
